Spontaneous interview time! This time we're chatting to :icontruesoprano:!

Before we get started, I apologize deeply for the deadness. Although nobody really complained so not really. I opened a new Monthly Feature Folder because if we're going to randomly attempt to revive the group, we might as well do it properly!
The rules still apply so read them before submitting.

How long have you been on dA and by extension, how long have you been foruming?

I've been on dA since 2005. I have 2 old accounts which I won't link here due to shame. I'd lurked and made a few posts since at least 2008 (on my old account), but I wasn't really considered a regular until around 2010.

How often do you make threads in Complaints?
Whenever things come up in my life that piss me off. Even if they're really stupid, I try to make them entertaining (and most of the time I fail, sorry...)

Do you hang out in any of the other dA forums?
Mainly Deviants and Music (OMG MUSIC SNOB), but I'll go wherever a thread title catches my interest.

What's one of your favourite threads or comments you've seen in Complaints?
Oh god... you guys have had so many golden moments, but two comments come to mind. First, there was a thread about how Hogwarts didn't have a special ed program, and `LOVEintheSNOW said "it's called Hufflepuff". Then, I have no idea what thread this came from, but ~TheGroovyMurphy said "come to Germany, we have doner" and then ~Happyjoy said "come to Israel, we have boner".

What's your favourite emote or PLZ?

Namedrop some of your forum friends!
I have this thing where I don't like namedropping people because I'm afraid of people feeling left out. No, this didn't come from me being left out a lot as a kid, what are you talking about?

What's your main medium? So how long have you been working in your medium? Why do you like it?

Well, my main medium is my voice! But if we're talking about dA-related works, GIMP is what I use to color. I do my best lineart on paper with pencil, but I don't have a good scanner at the moment, so I never post it here. Most of the lineart you see in my works was done on dA Muro.

Who would you consider your inspirations?
I don't have any specific art-related inspirations, but I might as well talk about my inspirations in life. First of all, my mom. She is just the most encouraging woman ever who's always there for me. She'll always be the one person who appreciates everything I do. Second, I need to my choir director, Dr. T. (not saying his full name because then you'd all look up where I live and stalk me forever) He always seems to be happy, and he inspires me to really think about the things in life that I enjoy. In his words, he inspires me to "wake up and say 'today, I get to make music'". I hope everyone reading this takes the time to appreciate what they do that they love, whether it be music, art or something else.

What's your favourite piece from your gallery? Is it different from your most popular piece?
Right now, I'd have to say this one: why are you a gym leader if you hate battling? by TrueSoprano It's kind of simple, but there's nothing too obviously terrible about it and I had a lot of fun drawing it.

What's a piece you worked really hard on or are really proud of but didn't get the response you hoped for?
Just about everything in my gallery! But if I wanted to pick something specific, Until It Sleeps by TrueSoprano. I worked for an entire week on this and I really like the result. (inb4 "lol 90s metallica")

Are you open for commissions? Would you like to be?
If you want me to draw something for you, I MIGHT do it. Keep in mind that I'm a full-time student and might not ever get it done. I'll be more likely to get it done if some kind of payment is offered, but please don't pay me before I finish it, or else I'll just feel pressured.

I can sing really high and shit.

If you could go back five years and give your younger self some advice, what would it be?
Things get better. Some people aren't worth it. Don't put all your eggs in one basket, and don't be afraid to take risks.

Thank you, TrueSoprano!

Boss Smiley by sbkMulletMan Unusual Gift by sbkMulletMan TELL ME ABOUT THE UNDERWEAR by sbkMulletMan

How long have you been on dA and by extension, how long have you been foruming?

7 years, with a few hours before Hitler's Birthday as the anniversary. I'm almost certain I got my first taste of the forums that very first year, but it was casual and infrequent and it wasn't until maybe 2007 when I really came to love Complaints and it wasn't until 2008 when I became recognized and "popular" after blatantly stealing a Colonel Hunter Gathers image as my icon thanks to my charming personality. :flirty:

How often do you make threads in Complaints?

Rarely. Although now that I'm taking "normal" classes in college, all of the teenagers fresh from high school have been giving me quite a bit of material to work with. So thanks to those half-wits, I've been making twice as much as usual. STUPID! You so STUUUUPID!

Do you hang out in any of the other dA forums?

In those early years I was in deviants, movies, games, but those places got really boring really quick for me, especially the games forum. I'm a former Senior Moderator for the G4TV forums, which was what I did before Complaintopia, so that should give people a good idea of how I learned to deal with internet idiots. I just don't like dealing with those kinds of idiots anymore. Let's face it, Complaints is where the character is at.

What's one of your favourite threads or comments you've seen in Complaints?

Oh, I know I'm not able to pick just one! That recent one with the no-fuse "macho" man with the daddy, mommy, and girlfriend issues was just GOLD! I can't even remember the guy's name, but getting inside his head and giving him the Hugo Strange treatment was the most entertaining thing I've seen here for months! Ask Angelishi, she ripped him a new one from a female perspective (seriously, this guy was a Freudian Freakjob!)

And before that, there was one that will always be a favorite of mine, and this one I actually saved the link!…

Wow, look how young we all were back then! ...Man, I look fat! But the Winnie The Pooh Pajamas and "Penis Snacks" comments I made make that one very special to me.

What's your favourite emote or PLZ?

For single image: :iconscruffyplz: It just works on so many levels! It was also the very first PLZ I typed (and as we all know, it sure as Hell wasn't the last!).

But if we're going for a "team" of Pleezees that compliment each other, I have to go with this:

Namedrop some of your forum friends!

Anyone who can "give me something to work with" is good for me! :iconcindarellapop::iconinternetsatan::iconzagittorch: come to mind. People are my fuel, my materials; the more they give me to work with, the more I can create! I'm The Psycho-Social Ahteest!

What's your main medium? So how long have you been working in X medium? Why do you like it?

Right now, digital is my medium, and I really wish that weren't true. I like it, but I accept it's a corner-cutting method that borders on cheating (for me!), but I also admit it's great practice, and the hundred dollars I spent on my tablet + Photoshop Elements bundle, plus the 40 bucks on Painter Essentials is a lot better than the buckets of cash used on traditional materials. So digital is just practical right now.

Who would you consider your inspirations?

Oh god, get the list! I'm a very "absorbing" person, sort of a "I am Legion, For We Are Many" deal. So anything I find useful, I take into myself, resulting in many inspirations. And without them, I am nothing.

Robert Crumb is a big one right now. He can take the worst about himself and turn it into the most honest art without hiding his dubious history or character. His brother Charles is also a strange kind of "anti-hero" inspiration for me (For more information, purchase the CRUMB documentary by Terry Zwigoff today!)

Bill Watterson, Gary Larson and Charles Schultz are big inspirations because The Sunday Funnies have been some of the earliest introductions of art and humor to me since childhood. What can I say, it built character!

George Carlin, Eddie Izzard and Conan O'Brien are huge inspirations just for being such funny bastards!

John Kricfalusi of course, not only for Ren & Stimpy leaving a huge mark on my childhood, but because he made me realize that it's perfectly okay to be a dick about your opinions, as long as you can intelligently explain your point of view.

Chuck Jones, Bob Clampett and Tex Avery are "The Big 3" of my "Classical" inspirations. They're the ones that combined art and humor for me and made the living cartoon character I am today. "Duck Amuck" is my madness in a nutshell!

Stephen King and Neil Gaiman cover the literary side of things. They remind me that no man, woman, child, animal, or even gods are safe. I don't like "safe", safe is restricting and censoring, which cuts artistic potential short (Disney can suck my ass!). And King also reminds me that bad mistakes can result in good humor .

Speaking of which, I'm just going to have to sum up the rest, because I can talk about inspirations all day (and look these up! Build some character!): The Nostalgia Critic, The Spoony One, The Cinema Snob for humor, Weebl for his hilariously catchy music, much of which I listen to while drawing (especially Savlonic), Winsor McCay for Little Nemo (NOT the stupid fish!), Drawn Together for reminding me you don't always need a "point" in order to be funny or vulgar, The Hernandez Brothers for Love & Rockets, and Tim Sale and Jeph Loeb for their work on Batman: The Long Halloween, which was a real life-changer for me in more ways than one.

Do you ever branch out in other mediums?

I should, but that budget thing's a bitch. The most branching I did was for actual art classes. I really wish I could get into oil painting more, but that's very demanding and messy. These days, I don't really "branch out", but rather "return" to something. It feels good when I get to use real, actual artist pens again.

What's your favourite piece from your gallery? Is it different from your most popular piece?

My favorite one is this nasty bit of work: The Self Righteous Prick Fairy by sbkMulletMan

The drawing itself isn't all that spectacular to me, in fact, I STILL need to fix the guy's glasses, but art isn't just about technical skills. Sometimes, the IDEA is what matters, especially in cartooning. This is the drawing that taught me how to strike the right nerve at the right time with the right (as in WRONG) people. It wasn't "nice", but to HELL with "nice". People don't notice "nice" (and those who do tend to be very boring people), which brings me to the most "popular", or rather most "infamous" of my works:

Fandom Freaks: Poonies by sbkMulletMan

Almost all the stuff I worked on since the SRPF didn't get a lot of recognition, which we'll get to next, which got me to thinking: "Why was the Prick Fairy so Popular/Infamous?", and it was the word "Infamous" that was the key! I mentioned earlier how I can get into the heads of some people, and well, that's what I did again. I knew what buttons to push, I knew how to get "the BAD fans" to jump to conclusions by turning their own horrible traits against them (I used myself as a guinea pig for years to develop that talent) and Boom! The idea worked! And best of all, I didn't even have to put in much effort into the drawing! I'll conclude this rant in the next section.

What's a piece you worked really hard on or are really proud of but didn't get the response you hoped for?

This lil' darlin': Jackpot by sbkMulletMan

That's what happens when I do "positive" drawings. That picture was me having fun with both my childhood and adulthood (...), but it went quietly with others. Maybe because it's something I did for myself, so I got to thinking, maybe if I draw things that get a connection with OTHER people, they'll be more responsive! And that's how the "Fandom Freaks" thing started, and it's only at the beginning (Future ideas include Nolan's Batman, Johnny Depp, Star Wars, TF2, The Spoony Experiment, Final Fantasy, and others) . I was a jerk and I pointed out how others could be jerks, but hey, guess what? I tried playing friendly, and it ain't workin'. So I flipped the coin and now I play dirty. Here's another example:

White Wine Sangria by sbkMulletMan

Yeah, it's nice, but it ain't reaching people. It's boring. Although I have to be fair, I can do some "nice" things that people like.

Little Bird by sbkMulletMan

But even then, it doesn't live up to the "meany" drawings. Let's face it, this kind of art is more entertaining (and the potential controversy even more so)

Toddler Trauma Theater by sbkMulletMan   Wait Your God Damn Turn by sbkMulletMan   Evil Fucking Zebra by sbkMulletMan

And I'm sure as HELL not going back to my "Tits For Pageviews" tactic! Well, I might throw a few in, but it won't be like last time! Never again...never...ever...again...

Are you open for commissions? Would you like to be?

I wish I could be. My chaotic moods sometimes keep me away from my own art, and now that school is my top priority, THAT keeps me busy! Right now I'm stressing out over finishing my Batman-related Mother's Day picture on time. But school is my focus now, so I'll be lucky if I can even do a free commission/suggestion, although I am proud of myself for doing this one in just a few hours after someone asked me to do it:

Evil Fucking Zebra by sbkMulletMan

:iconcasperplz::iconsaysplz: TIMING!
Oh, that's another one of my favorite Pleezees! And also my favorite Nostalgia Critic joke! Isn't side-trivia fun? Hey, print out this interview, slay a whole tree!

Where'd your username come from?

OH GOD, we're never gonna get done with this, are we? This is another long story, but it's an interesting one: In the 11th grade (2001), I started growing my hair long, as well as a bit short. So long story short, much like the hair, I grew a Mullet, and much like my art, it got a strong reaction from others (plenty of positive and controversial), but more importantly I loved it! This was also the time when I was heavily into Counter-Strike (I mentioned this was 2001, right?), and "Mullet Man" became my alias. The "SBK" came as a team/clan title; the original full spelling was [S*BK]MulletMan. "SBK" stands for whatever you want it to. For me, it was "Sadistic Bunny Killer". I was watching a lot of JoeCartoon and at the time. Animated animals dying was funny to me. Still is!

Wait, no, that story wasn't interesting, it's where I got my Mullet the name "Gary" that's interesting! While playing Counter-Strike, I was shot in the head and died. Behind me, the Easter episode of the Simpsons was playing, and it had JUST got to the part where the unicorn dies of exhaustion, and Flanders-God says "MY UNICORN! Oh, what have they done to ya, Gary?!". So I applied that to getting shot in the head in the game: "MY MULLET! Oh, what have they done to ya, Gary!?" People loved it instantly, the name stuck and it's now 11 years later!

If you could go back five years and give your younger self some advice, what would it be?"

There is SO much I could tell myself, but all that happened needed to happen, or else I would have wound up even worse. But since I'm a total bastard, especially to myself, I'd pull a Dave Lister (Red Dwarf) and taunt myself with cock-teasing time travel messages from the future:

" I know something I won't tell! I won't tell! I won't tell!
I know something I won't tell! Nah, NAH, Nah-Nah!"

I would however at least give myself a cryptic clue or two. "You want answers, kid? Watch the BBC miniseries JEKYLL!" and laugh as I faded away. I realize I'm also giving the readers cryptic messages, but hey, that's our style.

Will we see more of the Self Righteous Prick Fairy?

That depends on the rest of the world. I try to make the timing of the Self-Righteous Prick Fairy mean something (meaning it may very well piss people off because certain wounds are still fresh), so I don't use her that often. I might do a few "missed opportunities", like the Norwegian incident I really wanted to do, but missed out on due to personal schedule conflicts, but for the most parts, she'll only come out for appropriate world events as they happen. With that in mind, she's probably the most "real" of my drawings. When she's more established, I might make a few filler drawings for her, like a "daily awareness tear-away calendar idea I have. I have a feeling she'll come around for the US elections coming up, and may show up for the end of the world in December.

Can I touch your mullet?

Only if you wish to be assimilated. All glory to the Mulletorian Empire!

What ever happened to all the nuggets?

I forgot to eat them and they grew up into boneless chicken tenders, and they've overrun the place. Now if you'll excuse me, I have some cleaning up to do! Good night and Fuuuuuck Youuuuu!

Journal Entry: Mon Apr 23, 2012, 2:02 AM

*Note: Sorry for the bugginess if you got this a bunch. Have to use college internet and it's only got IE.

This month we're talking to our group's Fearless Leader, :iconthesylverlining:!

Dancing Badasses by TheSylverLining Imagine by TheSylverLining always by TheSylverLining

How long have you been on dA and by extension, how long have you been foruming?

On DeviantART, eight years. :) I was 12 when I joined; I'm 23 now. Foruming I discovered RELATIVELY recently, so... Three years, I'm guessing? I don't know. When was the "Elbow Rape" thread, does anyone remember? That was my first foray into Complaints or the forums here ever.

How often do you make threads in Complaints?

Whenever something weird happens in my life. Given the nature of my life... this is pretty often. Not everything I make threads about are BAD, per se, usually it's more of a "HOW DO THESE EXTREMELY UNLIKELY EVENTS/PEOPLE FIND ME? I AM A WEIRDNESS MAGNET." It's nice for the occasional legitimate rant, though.

Do you hang out in any of the other dA forums?

Not really. Complaints is home.

What's one of your favourite threads or comments you've seen in Complaints?

UHHH... So many good ones. There's a reason I hang out here so much. I can't think of any individual threads I've especially loved, but the kind in general I like are ones that make me laugh. I have a weird sense of humor, though.

What's your favourite emote or PLZ?

Namedrop some of your forum friends!

I like a lot of people in Complaints, whether it's personal friendship or unspoken LURKER-CREEPER ADMIRATION. Some people I really like I don't talk to as much as I should. Some special mention go to MoMoCookie, ThereAreNoTurkeys, CatapultedCarcass, sbkMulletMan, CoronusTheTerminator, the quieter :devMercuryIsLove, and everyone who frequents The Complaints Tavern. If I didn't mention you, don't be sad. You fuckin' know I lo:ve you. The list of everyone I like would be like, a crazy book of the Bible that goes AND METHUSELAH SON OF ICHEB SON OF GREG and shit. Y'all are cool.

What's your main medium? So how long have you been working in X medium? Why do you like it?

Digital painting! I mostly use Paint Tool SAI, and make it a point to try to make my stuff LOOK as traditionally-drawn as possible. I use a variety of pen and watercolor techniques, and I like fooling people. I love it when they go "NO WAY YOU DID THIS WITH A COMPUTER? NO WAY."
I've been working in it for... jeez, a long time. I was like 15 or something? IDEK. I like it because it's mess-free. And I just don't really have the working space for a crapton of paper and pencils and paints and stuff. :c A laptop and tablet is much more compact.

Who would you consider your inspirations?

Hmm... I don't really have one major inspiration, artistically. I have a couple artists here who I really enjoy, though, especially if they draw weird shit. I love weird shit. If you like beautiful, brilliant weird shit, you'd probably like :iconjillianlambertart: . I know her IRL and she's my snuggle-boo.

Do you ever branch out in other mediums?

I write! :la: If that counts. Poetry and prose. I've had short stories published in several online and print magazines, and am working on publishing my first novel. :) You can find lots of lit in my gallery.

Other media-wise, I sing, and enjoy making AMVs and fanvids. Mostly for Disney, but there's some Grimm and one Road to El Dorado fanvid in there. :dummy: You can check out my stuff here at my Youtube channel.

What's your favourite piece from your gallery? Is it different from your most popular piece?

Right now, probably "Danse Macabre:"

Mature Content

I love it, and it's pretty popular, but I think it scares some people.  Another one I like is "Fall Into The Sky":

fall into the sky by TheSylverLining

... Ayup. I draw humanized ponies. Kissin'. No fucks given.

What's a piece you worked really hard on or are really proud of but didn't get the response you hoped for?

UHHHHH... Most of my lit!  I realize dA is an art site, but sometimes I Think I'm more of a writer than an artist. I like this one, "Nightingale," which I wrote for King's Quest by Phoenix Online Studios in their "Four Winds" extended-universe blog:

Are you open for commissions? Would you like to be?

YES I AM. :la: IF YOU WANT SOME ART, HIT ME UP. I know that says 'valentines' day special', but fuck it, it's still that. I'M BEST AT CHARACTER BUSTS, PORTRAITS, AND KISSES. (Though the sheer magnitude of my school and regular art-job right now mean I might take a bit getting back to you.)

Where'd your username come from?

Uhhh... Like I said, I was 12 when I joined. I was really into anime, and had a real dork-girl boner for fox trickster spirits. Or something. I... really have no opinion of them now, but am too lazy to make a new account with a non-desu name and move shit over and. Whatnot.

"Sylver..." I really don't remember where that came from.  I always liked the color/metal and I REALLY LIKED INAPPROPRIATELY-PLACED Y'S back then, so. There you go.

Fun fact: I changed my name legally when I was 18, mostly for safety's sake. I can't tell you what it was before, but I will tell you that I seriously considered adding Sylver as my new middle name. I didn't, but it would have been kind of neat.

If you could go back five years and give your younger self some advice, what would it be?

Uh... Hm. "GET ON PROZAC SOONER," would be a good one. Frankly, it's sort of a miracle I'm typing this right now. For a while there I was just not going to make it. I realize the pharmaceutical industry is full of truly awful shit-heads, and drugs are not for everyone, but after correcting some chemical imbalances and getting some meds adjusted (even as recently as THIS YEAR! You might have noticed some of my little freakouts that bled into foruming), I'm happier and more secure than I ever have been. Still suffer with some major longterm anxiety and depression, but it's better. Lots better. That's some advice for you guys too - If you're suffering, don't be afraid to ask for help. Not necessarily drugs, maybe you just need someone you trust who will listen. Everyone needs it sometimes.

Tell the people you love how much you love them NOW while you can, because one day they won't be there. That one's important. I can't tell you how important. Learn from my mistakes, okay?

And lastly, "Try not to give too many fucks what people think of you." Life is much easier and more fun if you don't give a single shit. Hating wastes energy. Worrying wastes energy. I try very hard not to do either. Worrying is harder to avoid, but. Hey.

What ever happened to all the nuggets?

:iconceilingsylverplz::iconsaysplz: DIDN'T YOU HEAR?! THEY WENT TO WAAAAAAAAAAAASTE!

Monthy Features/Interviews Changes

Journal Entry: Sun Apr 15, 2012, 9:34 AM

Hey all, after some thought and hearing people's suggestions, hopefully most kinks are out of this system and everything is smoothed out. So here's how things should work from now on.

Feature Folder
:bulletgreen: Submit your deviations to the main Monthly Feature folder. This is the folder that will be shown on the front page.

:bulletgreen: At the end of the month, the current month submissions will be moved to a sub-folder to keep things neat and so people can look through past features.

:bulletgreen: All members on any level of Grievances are allowed ONE submission. Preferably one of your best which will be featured on a folder on the group's page and some basic quality control will be conducted. Right now the submission is automatically approved so we're trusting you to be sensible with your submissions.

:bulletred: At group administrators' discretion, if we feel a submission is too inappropriate or otherwise unsuitable, it will be removed and you should be sent a note saying why.
Some examples including but not limited to what's inappropriate/unsuitable:
Anything that breaks dA's TOS or other dA rules.
Commercial advertising.
Promoting other groups.
Promoting forums other than the Complaints forum.

:bulletred: If you submit more than one deviation, all but your first will be deleted from the folder. If you repeat the offence, all submissions will be removed.

:bulletgreen: Interviews are reserved for members of Forum Whore level and above.

:bulletgreen: For the foreseeable future, all interviews will be conducted by :iconweludixon:. If you want to be interviewed, send them a note with the subject, "Grievances Feature" and just to make sure you've been approved, put a link to a recently approved Feature submission in the note.
Say a little bit about yourself, how long you've been in the forums, what type of art you like making and how long you've been working in that medium. Just some general information so to get a feel why you deserve a full feature.

:bulletgreen: If you want you can suggest deviants to get interviewed too! :)

:bulletgreen: You can send a note asking or suggesting an interview at any time. Interview blogs will be published around the middle of the month between the 15th and 21st so just keep that in mind for your chances.

:bulletgreen: If you are accepted for an interview, you'll receive a note within two weeks saying so and when your slot will be.

:bulletgreen: There will be a list on the front page's feature folder listing the upcoming interviews. If the list gets particularly long, there may be two interviews in one month.

This should be everything people need to know right now. Any future rules or changes should be edited into the journal here.
